Au Revoir Simone @ La Casa 139

Sunday 25th November. Milano. La Casa 139.

I don’t even know where to start from. Ok first of all, if you’re wondering ”who the hell are Au Revoir Simone?”, shame on you! They’re this amazing 3-girls-3-keyboards-and-a-drum-machine band from Brooklyn, NY. Best ways to describe their indie electronic music : it’s like a hug, like a bunch of teddy bears hanging out inside your stomach, extremely dreamy etc. If you have no clue what I’m talking about check out the myspace www.myspace.com/aurevoirsimone or their official website www.aurevoirsimone.com.

I was SO happy when I saw on their Myspace that they would play in Milan. I’ve been looking forward to the 25th November for almost 2 months. and REALLY looking forward to it. I have so many wonderful memories now, some things really happened, some didn’t, but fuck I heard them sing all those songs and I remember them and I might be crazy but maybe it’s better if I never find out and leave it this way. Now it is just a little bit sa,d because it’s all gone, I know the memories will start fading away, but Alice overheard that they’re coming to Italy in July? I’m going to be there! Honestly, they’re such a breath of fresh air. One of the most original band in years. They’re not too loud, not too quiet, they can make you happy or happily malincholic, and in the end, make you feel good.

We (Me and Alice) got at the Casa 139 around 5 o’clock, and we were told that the club wouldn’t open until 9.30. So we were basically sitting on the sidewalk like homeless people, when around 6 o’clock we saw 3 girls and a guy coming towards the Casa 139. I don’t really remember how we approached them, I guess I just said ‘Au revoir Simone’ and Erika hugged me and then we got to hug and kiss all 3 of Au Revoir Simone. They were absolutely adorable! I gave them a rather crappy drawing I had made of them and they seemed genuinely happy. I then threw my coat on the floor and asked them to sign my ”official” Au Revoir Simone  hoodie. I think I’ve said something like ‘I feel like Jesus Christ’ because I had Erika on her knees in front  of me, and my arms spread, Annie on my right arm and Heather on my left one, and they all burst out laughing. Then Annie took a picture of me and Alice! That was so funny…I mean, since when do bands take pictures of their fans? So basically that was it, and we were abandoned again to our sidewalk. After 30 minutes Erika came out again because she had forgotten something at their Hotel (hotel Apollo…as if we asked her! and the thing turned out to be a weird ancient book.. mmmh) and when she came back she asked us if she could take another pic of us because the one Annie had taken didn’t come out. Of course we said yes.

Time passed and we were still the only two out of the Casa139! The people who worked there seemed to be rather amused when they heard we had been out in the cold since 5 pm. Au Revoir Simone and they crew went to have dinner (’we’ll be back!’), and finally at 9 they let us in!

The concert started at 10.30, we’re first row of course! They opened with The Lucky One and then Sad Song, and that’s more or less the only thing I’m sure of about  the set list. From the audience, an American girl from Chicago shouted that she wanted another dance song…Annie said something like she couldn’t because she had to pee and asked to her fellow musicians if they could take a break.  ”Ask them” and of course we agreed that she could pee. In the meantime Erika got the 2 American girls on stage, but she hadn’t fulfilled her evil plan yet. ”where’s the girl who did the amazing drawing?” and I found myself nearly killing myself jumping on stage with Alice… While Annie was gone, Erika and Heather played a kind of dance song and we should have pretended to play the keyboard with Erika…fo sho dahlink! Then Annie came back, they said they were going to play another dance song so we could stay on stage and dance. now this WAS very embarrassing! After the show we left the stage and went back to our first row… I think Annie said something like ‘this is turning out to be one of our most legendary shows’. They also played (for the first time) Haunted House, an all instrumental ‘’spooky” song they had composed. Annie made a mistake and Erika nudged her ”you gave away the spooky part!” O_O

A strangely magic moment was before Fallen Snow…when Heather said that winter was coming up and that she hoped it wouldn’t be a too long one… it was actually so cute & very melancholic. Now I could very well cry….don’t know why…….it’s just another winter…..but it makes me feel slighlty claustrophobic….or more than slightly.

Then the concert ended, it really seemed pretty short, and even though they came back for an encore, I’m sure they haven’t sung more than 10 songs…am I?

We said goodbye to Annie, Erika & Heather (and I took horrible pictures with them LOL no they’re adorable, but I’m just plain f-ugly in the pic) and they were still very sweet ^_^ I love how they stopped talking to whoever they were talking to say bye/hug/pic to me and Alice. It only takes a little to make you feel special.

I spent 27 euros on a fabulous yellow Au Revoir Simone shirt and their first album and we left…

It actually made me think….think that instead of complaining the whole time, I can go out and try to do whatever I really love doing, without being afraid or scared or embarrassed…. I’ll find my way. Some do it with a keyboard (and amazingly well I add), some with a book, some with art….whatever….. And people who attended the concert….. Aren’t you just dying to live in NY after having seen Au revoir Simone? there’s something so……cosmopolitan, so charming about them. I <3 NY.

[[Alice Gaia Sciuo (Chiara)...why not NY Summer 2008? We don't need a car.....and we'll drink somehow....but .......it'd be AMAZING.... should we start getting a job?]]

Thank you Alice for having come with me and supported me in my A R S love, and thanks Annie <3 Heather and Erika for having turned it into such an unforgettable night!
